Tips for Remodeling a Spare Room into a Nursery

Are you expecting a little bundle of joy? Adapting to parenthood isn’t always easy, but remodeling a spare room into a nursery can be. This nursery for your child is necessary to give the child their own space so they can sleep peacefully. For many, the room that becomes the nursery is often one that had a different, less critical purpose in the past, like a spare guest room or a game room.

Ensure the Nursery is Well-Ventilated

Good air quality and proper ventilation in the nursery are vital to your infant’s well-being. However, it’s often overlooked as many assume providing good ventilation is as simple as opening a window. Proper ventilation, which also can help with temperature regulation, moisture control, and eliminating bad odors, creates an environment where your baby can breathe properly. This also helps prevent some long-term respiratory issues that can come from toxins, mold, and allergens in the air.

Ensuring the nursery has a window is a good first step, but it doesn’t stop there. There are other things you can add to the room to improve the air quality. Ceiling fans can help maintain air circulation. Meanwhile opening the window daily for a short time can allow fresh air in. Installing an air purifier can remove allergens and pollutants, while a dehumidifier can remove excess moisture. If you really want to go the extra mile, install a separate thermostat in the baby’s room so it’s set at a consistent temperature.

Consider Your Nursery’s Colors

There has long been the belief that pink is for girls, while blue is for boys. You can hold to that, or you can branch out. Greens, yellows, purples, and especially pastels are very appealing for your nursery’s color scheme. However, there have been studies regarding visual stimulation in newborns arguing that black and white stripes or light and dark contrasting colors could be best for your baby’s cognitive development

Whatever colors you choose, take care to use low-VOC or VOC-free paints when you’re decorating a nursery. Paints with high VOC (volatile organic compounds) are emitted as gasses and include a variety of chemicals. These chemicals can have adverse short- and long-term health effects on the delicate lungs of a newborn.

Try a gentle pastel in a non-traditional color to add a touch of uniqueness to your nursery's color scheme

Think of the Future

As a future parent, your mind is likely focused on your newborn’s immediate needs. However, you should also be sure to consider the future of the nursery. Will the room remain the child’s room even as they grow up? Are you expecting to have another child in the future? These are critical questions to consider, as it could affect your decisions today.

If you see the nursery being your child’s room permanently, you’ll want to consider what will be easiest to redecorate as the child grows older. It might be tempting to paint a mural of baby animals or clouds. Yet will the child like that in the future? However, if you plan on having multiple babies over the next few years, it might be worth it to go that extra step with decorating the nursery.
