What to Ask Your Contractor Before a Remodel

When you hire a design-build contractor to remodel your home, there are important things to ask before the work begins. This is so you know what to expect, which makes the process smoother and stress-free. With the right contractor, such as Sordan Construction, your dream home will be yours.
What Is Design-Build?
Design-build in construction is where both the architectural designer and building contractor work together as a team on your remodeling project. You sign a single contract that covers them both, ensuring you get a unified, streamlined process. Instead of juggling multiple contracts, schedules, and contracts, you’ll work with one team.
Who Is My Main Point of Contact?
Because you’ll have a unified team, you’ll only need to keep in touch with one person. This point of contact is your dedicated Project Manager. It’s their job to supervise and coordinate the project, giving regular updates and answering questions as they come up. They handle all the metaphorical heavy lifting as the builders do the literal heavy lifting.
How Much Will My Project Cost?
Remodeling projects are an investment, and it’s important to budget properly. Therefore, we strive to give as accurate an estimate as possible. This is why Sordan Construction goes into extensive detail when planning the project. We consider the price of materials, the scope of the project, and the length of time it will take to complete before giving you our estimate.
However, as the work progresses, it’s not uncommon for surprises to come up. Hidden defects could be found that require our attention and additional supplies. It’s also not uncommon for you to decide to increase the scope of the project as we work. This will naturally change the cost of the project. When this happens, your Project Manager will discuss these changes with you and send you an Appendix to the Construction Agreement to adjust the original contract.
How Long Will the Project Take?
Every project is unique, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how long it will take. What your contractor can do is give you an estimate based on the work that needs to be done and keep you in the loop as the work progresses. With Sordan Construction, your Project Manager will send you a schedule of the work the design-build team will be doing along with an estimated date for when the project will be completed.
You’ll also get real-time updates on the work, both from the Project Manager and a mobile app. The Project Manager will send you information on what work was performed each week and what is planned for the following week. Meanwhile, the mobile app will let you track the project’s progress along the planned timeline in real time. You’ll never be left in the dark, making the remodeling process far less stressful.
