Tricks to Make a Small Room Feel Bigger

We all have a room in our house that is on the small side. Now, you could do some renovations to turn it into a larger room, but if you like your house the way it is, don’t panic. There are other ways to make a small room feel bigger. Whether it’s a bathroom, guest room, or study, your small room doesn’t have to look small with these simple tricks.

Get Rid of Clutter

The easiest way to make any room look larger is to clear out the clutter. The more stuff you keep in a room, regardless of size, the more cramped it will look. That’s why for a small room you’ll want almost a minimalist approach to furniture.

Consider what furniture is essential to the functionality of the room. For example, if it’s a study, a desk, chair, and bookshelves are a must. However, you could probably skip adding a television or end table to save space.

You will also want to keep everything as organized as possible. Don’t leave books just sitting on the floor, and consider installing hidden storage compartments to keep non-essential items out of sight.

Implement Reflective Surfaces

This trick is especially useful in a bathroom where you might not always have the liberty of removing excess furniture. It’s also good for a bathroom to have a large mirror or two. Both the room itself and the light will be reflected, which will make an otherwise small space appear more open. For a real optical illusion, line up the mirrors on opposite walls so they reflect back at each other!

If you’d rather not have too many mirrors in a room, use glossy paint and tile or lacquered furniture. It might not have exactly the same reflective effect as a mirror, but they will bounce the light around, which can trick the eyes all the same.

Paint the Walls and Ceiling the Same Color

If you want to visually expand a small room, an easy trick is to paint the walls and ceiling the same color. By doing this, you remove the defined plane between the ceiling and the walls. This creates an envelope of space that makes it easy to trick your eyes into thinking the room is bigger than it is.

For this technique to work, you need to consider the right color. Lighter colors, like white and light blue, are good for this because they reflect natural light. However, dark colors like navy blue could also be used to the same effect as it creates a sort of void and makes it harder to tell where the boundaries of the room are. The important thing is to make them cool colors, as warm colors have the opposite effect of making a room feel cozy.

A small room doesn’t have to feel cramped. With a few optical illusions and a little redecorating, you can make it appear larger than it is. When putting your dream home together, be sure to keep these tricks to make a small room feel bigger in mind.
